CHAPTER 15

When I open my eyes, it’s with an accompanying sigh of disappointment. Once again, no one visited me in my dreams, or at least if they did, I don’t remember it. Snow is still in my arms, and we’re lying in my four-poster bed, which is flying through the night sky, thrust along by propellors that sprout from each corner post, as if my bed is a gigantic camera drone.

I emit a yelp and grab hold of Snow as tightly as I can. During sleep, Snow and I have edged far too close to the left-hand side of the bed, and I scoot toward the center, hauling her backward with me. She opens her eyes. “Clio?”

“We’re in a dream, Snow. I don’t know if it’s yours or mine, but if we fall from this bed, one of us will be fine and one of us…”

I risk a look over the edge of the bed. “Oh, Hades. We’re over the grid, Snow. We’re back at the Wishing Well. And it’s the land of fire below us.”

As I speak, one of the propellors at the head of the bed sputters, shudders, and grinds to a halt. The bed dips crazily and we go tumbling across it. Snow’s eyes grow absurdly wide – inhumanly wide – with terror, then her entire body bursts into feathers and her hair smooths back from a whipping mess of fine, blonde tendrils to the sleek profile of an owl. With a squawk, she stretches arms that have morphed into gigantic wings, pushes off of the mattress on powerful claws, and soars into the night.

Okay. I guess this is my dream.

Now a propellor at the foot of the bed malfunctions and dies. I know this is my dream, so I can’t get hurt. Can I? “I am not afraid,” I shout into the night.

“Clio?”

That’s Prince Relicant’s voice, and I have a horrid new thought. What if this is his dream?

“Relicant!” I scream, and then there he is, arms out in front of himself, his legs straight, flying as true as an arrow, right at my dying celestial ship. He swoops in and plucks me off the bed just as the final two propellors fail simultaneously and the bed drops from under me like a stone.

Relicant rights himself in the air until he’s in a standing position, cradling me in his arms but still moving forward. “I’m sorry about the location,” he murmurs in my ear. “It’s one of the few spots I know no one is watching.”

So, it is his dream, then? I’m so confused.

But I feel intensely grateful and safe in his arms. I circle my hands around the back of his neck, close my eyes, and nestle my face against his chest. “Anywhere but the fire,” I murmur, and Relicant must hear me because he squeezes me tightly to him and I feel the breeze pick up as we increase our pace, flying so fast that tears stream from my eyes, even though I keep them closed the whole time.
